would you deface your designer handbag?
News just in from New York. In the same week that Francesca Eastwood,
daughter of Clint and newbie reality TV star, made the peculiar decision
to set fire to $100,000 Hermes Birkin bag in the name of art, a
disturbing new trend has arisen in the fashion world. Handbag-trashing –
the deliberate defacing of designer handbags.
Don’t believe us? Meet xoJane Beauty Director Cat Marnell [above]. Cat
was recently, proudly, photographed with a graffiti-tagged, filthy white
Balenciaga City bag. Whether it was intentional or merely a downside to
her subway commute that turned the white £945 handbag grey is unknown.
But we can probably assume the graffiti was intentional. But such is the
demonstrative power of the fashion world that others within the
blogosphere have now followed suit.
One bag-trasher is Alison Freer, a Texas-born costume designer, who felt
the need to make a ‘socio-economic/political/cultural statement’ on
designer labels, and promptly spray painted and stencilled her Louis
Vuitton multicolor monogram Murakami bag (check out the gallery above).
Why? As a reaction to consumerism and because of their ubiquity: ‘even
my cleaning lady had one’, she said.
Ditto a Gucci handbag which she has also ‘tattooed’. In her defence, it
was from a collaborative collection with Rihanna for UNICEF, so she was
in fact also doing her bit for charity. But riddle us this, Alison: why
do you now feel the need to vandalise your sky blue Hermes Kelly as
you’re now threatening? WHY?

That way, the Dubai resident from Egypt says she saves herself hundreds
of dirhams avoiding what she believes are overpriced fashion brands in
the UAE.
"I bought stuff online and got them delivered and the difference was at
least 30 per cent," she said. "When compared to a country like Egypt,
where customs and taxes are higher, the UAE is much cheaper, but
compared to Europe and the US, definitely not."
Given the tax-free environment and relatively low labour costs in the
UAE, shoppers could be forgiven for thinking the price of fashion would
be lower here than in other parts of the world.
In fact prices are as much as 25 per cent higher for brands such as
H&M and Zara, according to an analysis by The National and Caxton
FX, a currency exchange company based in London.
A patterned men's shirt, at Dh129 (US$35), is more than 10 per cent
higher in the UAE than in the United Kingdom, Italy and Ireland,
according to the analysis. A patchwork clutch handbag at Zara is as much
as 20 per cent higher in the Emirates than elsewhere, and a men's denim
shirt is 10 per cent more.
Only clothing in Switzerland was consistently more expensive than in the
UAE, the analysis found.
Of three brands surveyed - Mango, H&M and Zara - Mango was similar
in price or cheaper here than in other countries.
Analysts are divided as to why there are such discrepancies in pricing
among global brands, and they say a number of factors contribute to the
cost of a garment.
"It could be the fact that retail franchises have control to a degree
over the pricing," says Matthew Green, the head of research at the
property specialist CBRE and an expert on retail rents.
"It's currently pretty common to pay more for clothing items here.
Retailers do not give much direction of exactly why," he adds. "It's
probably down to the franchising and comparative costs."
Many retailers in the Middle East work under a franchise structure under
which they pay annual fees to the international brand names. Such fees
can often depend on sales performance.
Some local franchise retailers have control over their prices, but
others, such as Zara, are dictated by head-office policy.
"All these aspects mentioned have an influence in the price in each
market: real estate, labour costs, customs, logistics and
transportation, [as well as] purchasing capacity and competitors
pricing," says a spokesman for Zara.
"All of them intervene, none of them is remarkable. For us, the most
important point is to keep our commercial formula of quality products
with latest fashion trends at affordable prices."
When it comes to costs, retailers in the UAE pay lower rents and labour
costs than their peers elsewhere. New York, for instance, has the
highest retail rents in the world, followed by Hong Kong, Sydney, London
and Zurich.
But Dubai does not even make the list of the top 20, according to a
survey last year by CBRE.
Throughout much of the rest of the world, taxes are also added to
purchases such as clothing, which should increase the price outside the
UAE.
"The dynamics of the business here and the western world are very
different," says Vipen Sethi, the chief executive of Landmark Group, one
of the region's biggest retailers. "Each company has different
strategies on pricing and I think that's what determines the price of a
garment here and elsewhere in the world."
Landmark has a big collection of its own home-grown brands, such as
Splash, Max, Emax and Home Centre, as well as international franchises
with Reiss, New Look, Lipsy and Koton.
Ishwar Chugani, the executive director in the Middle East for Giordano,
which has more than 1,000 stores worldwide, says there should be a
maximum difference of 10 per cent between countries.
"Pricing is very subjective. It cannot be for every item you apply the
same formula," he says. "You need to see your market and competitors.
People should not get greedy and think that there's higher spend here so
you can take advantage of it."

Man attempts to steal handbag

to would-be purse-snatchers in Maple Valley: You might want to seek
business elsewhere.
That's what one man found after he allegedly attempted to steal a Maple
Valley woman's handbag at the new Fred Meyer. The result was a chase on
foot, road block and eventually the suspect was caught and detained by
citizens.
Laura Bingel stated in a telephone interview that she was just about to
leave Fred Meyer at around 4:45 p.m. on Tuesday, when a young man
grabbed her handbag from inside of her car as she was carrying a grocery
bag.
Rather than merely call for help, Bingel said she kicked off her shoes
and pursued the suspect barefoot across the parking lot.
Bingel said outright anger made her chase after him.
"I had never been mugged before," she said. "I had no idea what was I
thinking. I was mad. I couldn't believe it. I was just thinking I needed
to get my bag. He must have thought I wouldn't chase him."
The chase continued onto Kent Kangley Road and eventually towards Summit
Landsberg Road. Seeing cars on the road, Bingel began to scream at them
to stop the suspect.
"At that point there was enough traffic in the street that people knew
what was going on," she said. "He was running through the streets of
Maple Valley with my sparkling handbag. I thought he'd drop it once he
saw that I was chasing him. But he didn't drop it."
At that point, Bingel said four cars blocked the suspect, at which point
he dropped her handbag, but kept her wallet.
"He turned around and realized I was still chasing him," Bingel said.
Bingel then managed to get the attention of Ron Read, who was driving
home on the Kent-Kangley Road from his job as a part of the Maple Valley
Highway roadway improvement project.
"I see a guy running out front and a gal chasing him and I had my window
down, she said 'Somebody stop him!'" he said.
Read stated he cut the suspect off with his car. The suspect then tried
to run into the nearby woods. Read jumped out of his car and tackled the
suspect on the side of the road.
"I didn't want him to get away," he said. "The gal was distressed and
screaming. Adrenaline just kicked in. It was kind of foggy there at
first. I was just trying help her out. That was the firs time I had ever
done anything like that."
After he restrained the suspect, an off-duty security officer happened
to be driving by who was able to offer her handcuffs until the police
arrived. All of Bingel's belongings were recovered.
Without the aid of the other pedestrians and drivers, Bingel believes
the suspect would have gotten away.
"I don't know if I would have caught him,"she said. "I was barefoot,
running through gravel. I think that if all those cars and Ron hadn't
jumped out of his car, I would have lost at least my wallet. I didn't
know what to do with him when I caught him."
The suspect was booked into the King County Jail.
King County Sheriff's spokesperson Sgt. Cindi West stated in an email
interview that while the office normally doesn't encourage people to
pursue suspects, she admitted that "I would have chased him too."
"Better to lose your wallet than your life and in this day and age of
violence this could have ended with a different and bad outcome," she
said. "I think it was awesome that so many citizens jumped in to help
the victim. I have heard stories of people in other states standing by
and not getting involved when people need help. It was great to see that
so many jumped in to help."
